    Postconflict. Reframing a dialogue

    For the 2018 edition of GETXOPHOTO International Image Festival —the second chapter in our Transitions trilogy— we are exploring the narratives which emerge after conflict. Postconflict: reframing a dialogue will reflect on the very definition of conflict, its consequences and casualties, and the indelible mark it leaves upon societies and cultures. Through this prism we will dissect topics such as identity derived from violence, the historical memory of war and the emergence of post-colonialism narratives, as well as the results of colliding with the natural world and the capriciousness of consumerism.

    Each subject will be explored through immersive visual works, which challenge the way we think and question established ideas of engagement by embracing collaborative, multi-platform storytelling.

    Establishing such lines of communication has proved highly successful in fostering debate, not least during last year’s Festival. Entitled Transitions I – Post Globalisation, it explored the link between routine daily actions and global networks. Topics as diverse as immigration, populism, pollution and human rights were discussed within a geopolitical context.

    That conversation will be continued by this year’s programme before the Festival’s concluding chapter, Transitions III – Post Homo sapiens, which takes place in 2019. This will address the challenges faced by individuals in a present where the processes of acceleration, automation, artificial intelligence and scientific-technological advances are posing new challenges, as we edge closer to the concept of transhumanism.

     

    Monica Allende

    Allende is an independent curator, consultant and educator. She is the Artistic Director of GETXOPHOTO Photo Festival and Landskrona Foto Festival. She has collaborated with WeTransfer as a Consultant and Creative Producer, she was the director of FORMAT17 International Photography Festival, she collaborated with Screen Projects and is producing and curating Blue Skies, a multidisciplinary project with artist Anton Kusters to be exhibited at PhotoLondon in May.

    Previously Monica was the Photo Editor at the Sunday Times Magazine, where she launched Spectrum, the award-winning photography section. She is a visiting lecturer at the London College of Communication, London & EFTI in Madrid.

    Allende nominates photographers for the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize, the Prix Pictet, The Joop Swart Masterclass/ WPP or FOAM Paul Huf award, and is a reviewer and Ambassador for Reminders Photography Stronghold in Japan and Docking Station in Holland. She has served on juries worldwide including the Vogue Festival, Bar Tur Photobook award, La Fabrica / Photo London dummy award, Landskrona Foto, Burn magazine emerging photographer fund, phmuseum award, Visura Grant, National Portrait Gallery’s Taylor Wessing photographic Portrait Prize, World Press Photo among many others.

    She is the recipient of the Amnesty International Media Photojournalism Award, the Picture Editor’s Award, the Online Press Award and Magazine Design Award for Best Use of Photography.

    In between photographs

    The ways photographic images are being produced, distributed and perceived have changed rapidly in the past years and this affects not only our way of looking at images, but also our ways to “use” them, constantly shifting between contexts.

    Der Greif workshop provided experimental approaches to working with digital photographic archives, to editing and sequencing single photographic images.  The workshop transfered aspects of DER GREIF’s artistic photographic practice. The team of DER GREIF looked for a dialogue in which both parties – participants and directors – received new impulses. The goal of the workshop was to create opportunities for every participant to develop a different view onto his own work and onto photographic images in general. DER GREIF wants encouraged the participants to collaborate and exchange in order to create new approaches to working with and thinking about photographic images.

     

    About Der Greif
    Der Greif is an award-winning organization for contemporary photography. It is print-publication, online-publication, curatorial team and joint project all at once. The artistic core and root of the project is the ad-free print-publication. It combines and presents the works of photographers and authors of different origins in a holistic piece of art. The website is exhibition-, communication-, and information platform for participants and anyone interested in contemporary photography.

    Der Greif connects the digital and the analogue, exploring and expanding the borders and limits of image-distribution and -reception in the digital era. All Der Greif-projects connect virtual, physical and / or print-spaces. Since its inception in 2008, the project is involved with contemporary issues like the changing perception of authorship, de- and recontextualization of images, appropriation, artistic approaches to photographic archives and the rise of the remix culture.

    Der Greif has worked with institutions such as FOAM, Aperture Foundation, C/O Berlin, Fotomuseum Winterthur and published works from about 1.000 photographers and artists in printed publications as well as online.

    Experiments with the image 

    Space for the reviewing and questioning  issues related to the image and creation. Talks and dialogues throughout the day, morning and afternoon, with food included, in a relaxed atmosphere. A remote place, with no escape, neither for speakers nor for assistants.

    Marta Weiss. Curator of the Victoria & Albert Museum
    Marta Weiss is curator of Photography at the Victoria and Albert Museum. She joined V & A in 2007 after two years in the MET Photography Department. She holds a BA in Art History from Harvard and a Master’s and a PhD from Princeton in the same field, always focusing on the history of photography. She has organized and published books and essays on topics ranging from Victorian photocollage to contemporary Middle Eastern photography. Weiss is the curator of the international traveling exhibition Julia Margaret Cameron, and author of the accompanying catalog, Julia Margaret Cameron: photographs to electrify with delight and scare the world.

    David Jiménez. Photographer
    He holds a degree in Fine Arts from the UCM. For 25 years he has been developing personal projects in the format of books, exhibitions and audiovisuals, with images full of ambiguity and subtlety that take you from the everyday  to the poetics. His works have visited  cities such as Rotterdam, Warsaw, Arles, Turin, Athens, Seoul, Bogota, and  many Spanish cities. He received the award Revelation Photographer in PHotoEspaña 99 and the Arts Award of the Villa de Madrid 2008. He has published five books, including Infinito, considered one of the pioneers of the photobook in our country.

    Julián Barón. Photographer
    Barón studied  Industrial Engineering. He left his job to be part of the Blank Paper collective in Madrid. In the last decade he has developed a body of work that reacts to an agitated socio-political context and that connects his work with teaching and coordination of projects of didactic character. In 2011 he published his first book C.E.N.S.U.R.A., with which he received the honorable mention in the First PhotoBook Award, Paris Photo-Aperture Foundation. He currently coordinates the online project imagenred.org, a pedagogical, collaborative and transversal profile, promoted by the Fotocolectania Foundation.

    María Santoyo. Director of EFTI’s Masters in Photography
    She holds a degree in Art History from The Complutense University of Madrid, researcher and professor specialized in the history of photography and image analysis, María Santoyo has eighteen years of experience in the cultural sector, more than thirteen dedicated to the direction and management of projects, exhibitions and specialized teaching, activities that she has been developing independently since 2014. She currently combines the curating of exhibitions with the direction of the International Master of Photography at the EFTI school, a position she has held since 2017. As curator, she is responsible for exhibitions such as La bailarina del futuro: de Isadora Duncan a Joséphine Baker, Houdini: las leyes del asombro, Julio Verne: los límites de la imaginación o Nikola Tesla: suyo es el futuro, presented at Fundación Telefónica between 2014 and 2018.

    Gonzalo Golpe. Independent editor and curator
    He holds a degree in Hispanic Philology and  in Publishing and Publication of Texts by the University of Deusto. He is a specialist in desktop publishing and graphic production. From 2010 to 2013 he managed Siete de un Golpe, a workshop specialized in the self-publishing of photobooks, artist editions and graphic production. Since 2014, he has been part of La Troupe, a collective of graphic arts professionals dedicated to the work of the author, both in its editorial and expository aspects. Golpe collaborates as an editor in The Portable Photo, a collection of author applications by contemporary Spanish photographers, powered by espadaysantacruz Studio. He manages the collection of 64P photographic essays for La Fábrica Editorial, with which he collaborates as an independent editorial board.  He would also curates artistic projects occasionally.

    Der Greif
    Designers, independent curators and innovative editors based in Munich. Der Greif is an organization awarded for contemporary photography. It is a printed publication, online publication, curatorial team and joint project, all at the same time. The artistic core and root of the project is the print publication free of advertising. It combines and presents the works of photographers and authors from different origins in a holistic work of art. Der Greif has worked with institutions such as FOAM, Aperture Foundation, C/O Berlin, Fotomuseum Winterthur and has published works by approximately 1,000 photographers and artists in print and online publications.

    Silvia Omedes. Independent curator
    She is a cultural manager, independent curator, photographers agent, editor and professor of documentary photography. Her professional experience begins as a coordinator of exhibitions at the Guggenheim Museum and continues at the Center for Contemporary Culture of Barcelona. She founded and directed from the Photographic Social Vision Foundation in Barcelona, ​​and since June 2013 she has directed the Doc Field Barcelona international festival. As graphic editor, she has collaborated with Blume publishing house and Ojodepez magazine and is a member of the advisory committee of the magazine 7.7 and La Maleta de Portbou. She is a guest lecturer in the Photoperiod of the UAB, in the Master of Photography of the Instituto Europeo di Design in Madrid and in the masterclass organized by the World Press Photo Foundation in Europe.

    Alberto Salván. Tres Tipos Gráficos
    Alberto Salván holds a degree in Graphic Design by the Istituto Europeo di Design. In 2003, he co-founded the graphic design studio Tres Tipos Gráficos in Madrid. There, they focus their activity on editorial design, branding, packaging and digital graphic developments. His work in the co-direction of Tres Tipos Graficos has been recognized in several awards and contests such as Premio Gràffica 2015, D & DA 2015, various Laus between the years 2010-15, Top Fedrigoni Award 2013, Type Directors Club 2012 and PhotoEspaña Best book of National Photography 2012, among others. In the field of plastic arts, where he develops projects around the image and its representation canons, it is worth highlighting awards, recognitions and exhibitions such as Foam Talent (Amsterdam), finalist FotoPress La Caixa’14, P2P-PHE’14 or New Spanish Photography. Visions beyond borders, (New York).

    Jon Uriarte. Photographer and educator
    He is an image activist. He began a wide range of participatory activities in photography that include the Photobook Club Barcelona (2011-2014), and Widephoto, a contemporary photography program that in its first two editions has organized talks, workshops and dinners with photographers like Joan. Fontcuberta, Taiyo Onorato-Nico Krebs, Julian Barón, Cristina de Middel and Aleix Plademunt. His blog “Blog en Bruto” has been a reference in theory and writing of photography for the new scene of young Spanish photography. His work has been exhibited at photography festivals, collective and individual exhibitions all over the world, and has been published internationally by Stern, The New York Times and La República, among many other publications. He has lectured at Museums and Art Institutions as well as Arts Santa Mónica (Barcelona), Arteleku (Donostia) and La Casa Encendida (Madrid), Photobook Bristol, among others. He is also a professor of photography at IDEP in Barcelona and EFTI in Madrid.

    Alejandro Castellote. Independent curator
    From 1985 through 1996 he was director of the Photography Dept. at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid, where organized the photo-festival FOCO (1985 to 1989). He has been curator and co-founder of PHotoEspaña, Madrid (1998 to 2000). In 2003 he curated MAPAS ABIERTOS. Fotografía Latinoamericana 1991-2002. He has served as guest curator for the X Venice Biennale of Architecture, 2006; Getxophoto, Bilbao (2007 through 2009); the Latin American section of Biennale Photoquai (Museum Quai de Branly) 2007-2009, Paris; Seoul Photo Fair 2010, Korea and the Singapore International Photography Festival 2012. He was director of the Daegu Photo Biennale 2014, Korea; guest curator of the ChangJiang International Photography & Video Biennale, Chongqing, and the Image Triennial of Guangzhou 2017, China. From 2014 through 2016 he has been director of the Latin American Master of Photography and Visual Arts at the Centro de la Imagen of Lima, Peru.
