50th anniversary
In 2023, the legendary Gwendolyne nightclub in Algorta would have been around for half a century. It opened in 1973 and until it closed in 1999 it was a landmark venue for live music in Bizkaia. Great singers such as Karina, Massiel or Los Panchos performed there, and it saw the generation of bands from the Getxo Sound movement grow up, sharing the stage with great international rock figures such as the Supersuckers or Teenage Fanclub. As well as concerts, it was a venue for dance sessions, contests and all kinds of events and shows. Classic stand-up comedians such as Arévalo, Bigote Arrocet or Marianico el Corto have performed at the Gwendolyne, films have been shot and weddings have even been held there. Better known to its regulars as the Gwendo, this place is part of our collective memory and so in this edition of Getxophoto we wanted to pay homage to it with images and archive material.
