Lucas Bambozzi

A vingança é uma espécie de justiça selvagem

When it rains in São Paulo, trunks and branches often fall on the roads, causing complaints from drivers. They are convinced that the city belongs to them, and blame the trees for disrupting traffic. Lucas Bambozzi noted this and, inspired by the words of one of the fathers of the Enlightenment Francis Bacon, wondered what would happen if trees took revenge on cars with “a kind of wild justice”. He imagined that, fed up with living in asphalt and stressed by pollution, they would seize vehicles and hold them hostage. These visions came true when a white Volkswagen beetle was found hanging from a eucalyptus tree on farmland near São Paulo that had been destroyed by fire. The site-specific piece was incorporated into an outdoor tour of the farm until another fire caused the car to fall.

Through photographs, videos, a photo novel and an installation, this project takes an ironical look at changes in the social status of the automobile. What was once an icon of speed and urban life has become a symbol of the energy and environmental crisis, and has been subjected to moratoriums and bans on entering cities.

Born in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1976, Lucas Bambozzi is a multimedia artista. He holds a degree in Social Communication from the University of Belo Horizonte, a master in Philosophy of Computer Science from the University of Plymouth and a PhD in Architecture from the University of São Paulo.
