Lapsus
In its simplest sense, a lapse is an oversight and generally refers to a mistake made when speaking. In the psychoanalytical sense of Sigmund Freud, a slip is a confusion caused by the unconscious, which reveals a repressed thought, fear or desire. From the point of view of its Latin etymology, a lapse also refers to the passage of time from one moment to another.
All these meanings are present in this new project created by Susana Blasco especially for Getxophoto 2023. She uses collage and geometry, which are common in her work, in a selection of photographs from the Fototeka Kutxa Fundazioa archive. Each image, divided into two halves, alludes to the tension between serenity and mental noise, pause and disturbance, but it also refers to the transit between the two states, to the need to give us a real moment of rest that brings us balance.
Susana Blasco was born in Zaragoza, Spain, in 1972 and she currently lives in Bilbao. She is a graphic designer, illustrator and collagist, and feels a special connection with geometry, fragmentation or repetition. She studied Advertising and Business Studies, which she complemented with art and design courses, including her training at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. After working for more than 10 years in different studios and advertising agencies as a graphic designer and art director, she set up her own graphic studio. Susana has received several awards, including the DPZ scolarship and the Gràffica Award for her contributions to the collage technique. Her work, both graphic and artistic, has been reviewed in specialised media and has taken part in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Los Angeles, Miami, Lisbon and different Spanish cities.
